Grieving the loss of our beloved leader, Doreen Achieng’ Baraza Awino

It is with heavy heart that we inform you of the passing of our dear colleague and friend, Doreen Achieng’ Baraza Awino. Doreen was involved in a traffic accident on Saturday, February 10th, and she was taken to a hospital in Kisumu and treated. Unfortunately, Doreen succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment in the early hours of 14th February. The Lwala community grieves this loss alongside her husband, children, family, and friends.

As the Director of Health Systems Strengthening, Doreen led Lwala’s work to advance community-led health in Migori County and across Kenya. Because of her tireless advocacy and relationship building, communities now have access to health care where there was none. When someone’s child receives care from a community health worker, or when a mother is saved from postpartum hemorrhage, Doreen’s fingerprints are there. She brought her passion to the global stage, where she advocated on behalf of our communities and told the story of change we’ve accomplished with government and partners. She was a powerhouse for good who impacted so many lives.

When asked why she chose to do this work, she said, “I won’t be sitting in an office and thinking of the people abstractly. I knew I would be able to talk and engage with people and tap into the knowledge of the community.”

In the days since Lwala staff learned the news, many have shared their most precious stories of Doreen, and memories of what made her so special. She had an infectious laugh and radiated warmth–in her eyes, no one was a stranger for long. She knew everyone, and everyone knew her. A tireless advocate, she used her power of relationships for good, and she moved mountains to make the lives of those around her better. She was many things to many people and at Lwala–a leader, a champion, a mentor, a friend, and of course, everyone’s favorite person to laugh with.

Doreen was the face of Lwala to our community, peer organizations, partners, and the Ministry of Health, as well several counties across Kenya. She was also well known to many of our donors. We are certain that many of you will feel her loss as keenly as we do, and we look forward to engaging with you more soon. If you’d like to share your condolences, please do so on this virtual card

To Doreen: you brought light and joy to all our lives, and your passion and power had an impact on countless people in Kenya and around the world. Rest in peace our friend.
